Nami Island Day Trip from Seoul: Tour or On Your Own?
Last Updated on October 16, 2026
Quick Answer
Both work. On your own, a Nami Island plus Garden of Morning Calm day costs about ₩49,400 in transport and tickets (as of October 2026), and the ITX-Cheongchun train reaches Gapyeong in roughly 40 minutes from Cheongnyangni. A bus tour listed from ₩72,579 adds hotel-area pickup and a fixed itinerary. Choose the tour if you want zero logistics; go alone if you want control over timing.
The Full Answer
Nami Island (남이섬) is a river island in Gapyeong County, east of Seoul. You have two real options: a packaged bus tour with pickup near Hongdae, Myeongdong or Dongdaemun, or the public route — a train to Gapyeong Station, a short hop to the ferry pier, and a boat to the island.
Most English guides present this as a choice but give you no numbers to decide with. This guide puts both side by side using Nami Island’s own pages (namisum.com), the Garden of Morning Calm’s official site (morningcalm.co.kr) and the rail bike operator’s site (railpark.co.kr). I read all three directly in October 2026, along with seven top-ranking English guides, to see what those guides leave out. Four things stood out:
- The self-guided Nami Island plus Garden of Morning Calm (아침고요수목원) day comes to ₩49,400 per adult; the tour I compared it with is listed from ₩72,579.
- The ₩16,000 entrance fee in some English guides is out of date. The adult price is now ₩19,000, ferry included.
- There is an official direct shuttle from Seoul. None of the seven English guides mentions it.
- “Gangchon Rail Bike” and “Gapyeong Rail Bike” share an operator but are different sites, and neither can be booked on the day.

What the Tour Itineraries Actually Say
I read the product pages for three Seoul-departure Nami Island tours in mid-October 2026. All three include the Nami Island entry ticket and ferry plus Garden of Morning Calm admission; two add Petite France and the Italian Village. None includes meals, and all allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
All three list a duration of “10 to 12 hours.” The segments on each page are more specific.
| Tour type | Stops listed | Listed time at Nami Island | Listed from (as of October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nami Island + Garden of Morning Calm, optional rail bike | Garden 1.5 h, Nami 3.5 h, rail bike 1.5 h (optional) | 3.5 hours | ₩72,579 |
| Nami Island + Garden + Petite France, optional rail bike | Garden 1 h, Petite France about 1 h, Nami 3 h, rail bike 1.5 h | 3 hours | ₩112,197 |
| Nami Island + Petite France and Italian Village + Garden | Nami 3.5 h, Petite France 45 min x 2, Garden 1.5 h | 3.5 hours | ₩107,592 |
Two observations. First, these are not three independent operators: the third listing names TOURSTORY as its supplier, and the Nami Island shuttle described below is run by the same company. I could not confirm the supplier of the first two, so treat this as a narrow sample rather than the whole market.
Second, the busiest itinerary does not add up to its headline. Summing the listed segments of the Petite France version (bus 2 h, Garden 1 h, 50 min, Petite France 30 + 30 min, 30 min, Nami 3 h, 1 h, rail bike 1.5 h, return bus about 2 h 10 min) gives roughly 13 hours against a stated 10 to 12. That is my own addition, not an operator statement, and I found no reliable Korean data on actual weekend return times, so I will not guess at one.
The bus legs themselves are realistic. The official shuttle from Dongdaemun takes 100 minutes out and 90 minutes back on a normal day, in line with the 100-minute bus leg on the shorter tour.
Departure times appear on the product page only after you pick a date. I did not select one, so I am not stating a time here.
Going on Your Own: The Route and the Numbers
The train route
The ITX-Cheongchun (ITX-청춘) runs from Cheongnyangni and Yongsan to Gapyeong Station. Timetable data derived from Korail shows Cheongnyangni to Gapyeong at ₩5,700 in standard class, about 39 to 40 minutes, with 18 departures a day between 05:55 and 23:07. From Yongsan it is ₩6,900 and about an hour. Nami Island’s own transport page agrees on the durations. For how Korail booking and refunds work, see our KTX booking guide.
From Gapyeong Station the ferry pier is about 1.5 km away: Nami Island’s page lists a 20-minute walk, city bus 10-4, or about five minutes by taxi. If you are also visiting the Garden of Morning Calm, the Gapyeong circular bus day pass (₩8,000) covers that hop too. Route, stop order, fares and winter last runs are in our Gapyeong tourist bus guide.
The ferry and the entrance fee
The crossing takes about five minutes. In daytime (09:00 to 18:00) boats leave every 10 to 20 minutes, so about 20 minutes is the schedule’s own ceiling for a boat wait. Queue time at the ticket window is separate, and I could not find numbers for it. During the autumn extension (September 18 to November 22, 2026) the first boat leaves at 07:30 daily.
Verified — Many English guides still quote an adult entrance fee of ₩16,000 for Nami Island. The island’s own price page now shows ₩19,000 for adults, with the round-trip ferry included. ₩16,000 is the current discounted price (middle and high school students, visitors aged 70 and over). Children from 36 months through elementary school, and early-bird visitors who buy before 08:00, pay ₩13,000. The page lists no separate foreigner price. (As of October 2026, from namisum.com.)
The Garden of Morning Calm
The Garden is open daily 08:30 to 19:00, last entry 18:00, with no advance booking needed. Adult admission is ₩11,000 (as of October 2026). A chrysanthemum exhibition runs October 17 to November 15.
The cost table

| Item | On your own | Tour |
|---|---|---|
| Train, Cheongnyangni to Gapyeong | ₩5,700 | Included (bus) |
| Gapyeong circular bus, day pass | ₩8,000 | Included |
| Nami Island entry (ferry included) | ₩19,000 | Included |
| Garden of Morning Calm | ₩11,000 | Included |
| Train back, Gapyeong to Cheongnyangni | ₩5,700 | Included (bus) |
| Total, one adult | ₩49,400 | From ₩72,579 |
Verified — Adding up the official prices, the self-guided day is about ₩23,000 less than the cheapest tour I checked, before your subway ride to Cheongnyangni (see the Seoul subway guide and the T-money card guide). Returning via Yongsan makes it about ₩51,800; via Cheongpyeong Station about ₩48,200, but see the warning in the tips below. The tour price is the “from” figure and excludes lunch. That gap is what you pay for pickup and not having to read a train timetable.
The Official Direct Shuttle English Guides Skip
Nami Island’s transport page (namisum.com/277) lists an official shuttle from central Seoul: no train, no transfer.
| Departure | Leaves Seoul | Arrives Nami Island | Leaves Nami Island | Back in Seoul |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dongdaemun | 09:50 | 11:30 | 16:30 | 18:00 |
| Hongdae | 09:00 | 11:30 | 16:30 | 18:50 |
The island’s page notes that shuttle times can shift on peak-season weekends. The shuttle is operated by Ktourstory, whose own site lists a round trip at US$27.81 and a Nami-Island-only package at US$39 (as of October 2026). I did not book it, so check seats and the exact pickup point there first.
Verified — Of seven English-language Nami Island guides I read in October 2026, none mentions the official shuttle. Six describe the train, taxi, bus and ferry route, and one is a tour promotion. If you want one fixed bus each way and do not need the Garden, this is the option those guides miss.
The trade-off: the shuttle gives you roughly five hours on the island and nothing else.
Rail Bike: Same Company, Different Places
Tours with an optional “Gangchon Rail Bike” and bus maps showing “Gapyeong Rail Bike” look like two businesses. Both belong to Gangchon Rail Park Co., which runs three courses from one website (railpark.co.kr):
| Course | Location | Format | Price (as of October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gimyujeong | Chuncheon, near Gimyujeong Station | One-way rail, shuttle back | ₩40,000 (2-seat) / ₩56,000 (4-seat) |
| Gyeonggang | Gyeonggang Station | 4-seat only | ₩35,000 (4-seat) |
| Gapyeong | Gapyeong town, next to the five-day market | Electric, round trip to Gyeonggang | ₩36,000 (2-seat) / ₩48,000 (4-seat) |
Prices are per vehicle, not per person.
Verified — Rail bikes cannot be booked on the day. The operator’s rules say a reservation is confirmed only after payment, the date and time cannot be changed, and same-day booking is not offered; walk-ups get leftover seats only. Miss your slot and the ticket is not refundable. Cancellation is steep: full refund up to three days ahead, then 20% deducted two days ahead, 30% one day ahead, and 50% up to one hour before departure. I could not find a wet-weather rule on the official site.
The product pages I read do not say which course a tour’s “Gangchon Rail Bike” means, so check before paying for the add-on. English guides quoting ₩36,000 and ₩48,000 are quoting the Gapyeong course.
Who Should Take the Tour
The tour suits you if:
- You want one pickup and one return, with no Cheongnyangni transfer or train timetable.
- You want two stops in one day. On public transport, Nami Island to the Garden depends on an hourly circular bus, so a missed connection costs up to an hour.
- You are travelling with people who do not want to navigate, such as parents, young children or first-time visitors.
Going on your own suits you if:
- You want to leave Nami Island when you are done, not at a fixed time.
- You are a group, where the per-person gap adds up.
- You want to stay late. Boats run until 21:00 or later.
If you would rather skip the logistics, a Nami Island and Garden of Morning Calm day tour from Seoul covers both stops with hotel-area pickup and an optional rail bike add-on.
For a day trip where going alone is possible but much harder, see our DMZ tour guide.
The Garden’s Starlight Festival and Winter Timing
The Garden of Morning Calm’s winter lighting season usually runs from early December to mid-March, with official hours of 10:00 to 21:00, and until 23:00 on Saturdays. The 2026-27 start date had not been announced when I read the Garden’s notice board on October 16.
One tour operator’s page lists a “winter schedule” of December 5 to March 15 with later departures for the festival. Those are the previous season’s dates, and the Garden has not published new ones, so treat them as carried over rather than confirmed.
In autumn, the boat extension runs to November 22 and foliage weekends are the island’s busiest. Our Hwadamsup autumn tickets guide and Seoraksan cable car guide cover other autumn day trips.
What You Need to Know
- Prices and times here are as of October 2026. Entry fees, boat times and tour prices change by season.
- Foliage weekends are slow. A November 2024 local news report described roads around Gapyeong as close to gridlocked on weekends. I found no reliable wait-time data, so I give none.
- Payment. Tour and rail-bike bookings are prepaid online. For the circular bus, see cash or card in Korea.
- Taxi fares between Gapyeong Station and the pier are not published by an official source, so I am not quoting one.
- Stay connected. Trains and rail bikes are booked online; see eSIM and SIM options.
Practical Tips
- Decide Garden or no Garden first. Nami Island alone suits the official shuttle; Nami plus the Garden suits the circular bus or a tour.
- Book the ITX-Cheongchun ahead on foliage weekends. There are 18 departures a day; reserve a seat rather than buying at the station.
- Be careful returning from Cheongpyeong Station. A timetable aggregator listed only four ITX departures from Cheongpyeong to Yongsan on a Friday, against 14 the next day. I could not check Korail’s own timetable, so verify for your date.
- Take an early boat. The autumn extension starts at 07:30 until November 22.
- Reserve rail bikes before you leave Seoul. Same-day booking is not possible.
- Carry the Hangul names “남이섬 선착장” (the pier) and “아침고요수목원” (the Garden) for drivers.
- Check which rail bike course a tour add-on means before paying.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get to Nami Island from Seoul without a tour?
Take the ITX-Cheongchun from Cheongnyangni (about 40 minutes) or Yongsan (about an hour) to Gapyeong Station (as of October 2026). The pier is roughly 1.5 km away: a 20-minute walk, city bus 10-4, or a short taxi ride. Alternatively, the official direct shuttle from Dongdaemun or Hongdae skips the train entirely.
How much is the Nami Island ticket, and does it include the ferry?
The adult price is ₩19,000, including the round-trip ferry (as of October 2026). Discounted tickets are ₩16,000 (middle and high school students, visitors aged 70 and over) and ₩13,000 (36 months through elementary school). There is no separate price for foreign visitors, and the island is open every day of the year.
How long does a Nami Island day trip from Seoul take?
The official shuttle leaves Hongdae at 09:00, reaches the island at 11:30, and leaves at 16:30 for an 18:50 return. Tours combining another stop list 10 to 12 hours. On your own the train is about 40 minutes each way, but I could not confirm bus connection times, so I will not give a total.
What time does Nami Island open, and when is the first boat?
The first boat to the island leaves at 08:00, and the first boat back at 08:05. During the autumn extension (September 18 to November 22, 2026) the first boat leaves at 07:30 every day. Daytime boats run every 10 to 20 minutes.
Is Gapyeong Rail Bike the same as Gangchon Rail Park?
Same operator, Gangchon Rail Park Co., but different places. The Gapyeong course is in Gapyeong town and costs ₩36,000 for a 2-seat or ₩48,000 for a 4-seat vehicle (as of October 2026). The Gimyujeong course is in Chuncheon. Same-day booking is not available on any course.
Do I need to book Nami Island or the Garden of Morning Calm in advance?
No. The Garden sells tickets on site (₩11,000 for adults) and needs no reservation. Nami Island is open daily, and online tickets can also be bought in advance. Only the rail bike and the tours need advance booking.
Is a Nami Island tour worth it compared with going alone?
It depends on what you value. The self-guided route is about ₩49,400 for Nami Island plus the Garden against a tour listed from ₩72,579. The difference pays for pickup, a fixed itinerary and no train-and-bus planning. Choose the tour for convenience and go alone for flexibility.
Is there an official shuttle bus from Seoul to Nami Island?
Yes. Nami Island’s transport page lists a direct shuttle from Dongdaemun (09:50) and Hongdae (09:00), operated by Ktourstory, returning at 16:30. Times can shift on peak weekends, so confirm when you book.
